By the late 1970s, Porsche began diversifying its lineup beyond the rear-engined 911. With the 924 and later the 928, they explored front-engine, transaxle layouts to improve balance, handling, and everyday usability.
This layout placed the engine up front and the transmission at the rear, delivering near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution—a hallmark that would define the 944 series.
The Porsche 944 debuted in 1982 as a more potent evolution of the 924, featuring a Porsche-designed all-alloy 2.5L inline-four engine derived from half of the 928’s V8. With wider arches, improved dynamics, and better refinement, it quickly gained a reputation as a balanced, usable sports car.
But the 944’s true transformation from capable GT to true high-performance contender arrived in 1985 with the launch of the Porsche 944 Turbo, known internally as the Type 951/952.
Porsche turbocharged its 2.5L inline-four to produce 220 hp and 330 Nm of torque, using a K26 turbocharger and a sophisticated Bosch Motronic engine management system resulting in a phenomenal performing sportscar.
Featuring a unique front bumper with integrated fog lights and a lower drag coefficient as well as upgraded brakes derived from the 911, a reinforced gearbox with an available limited-slip differential, 0–100 km/h was achieved in 5.9 seconds and a top speed approaching 245 km/h—performance that rivalled many supercars of the era, all with daily drivability.
This cemented the 944 Turbo as a serious performance car and broadened Porsche’s reputation for engineering excellence beyond the 911 lineage.
In 1987, Porsche refined the Turbo further with small updates. Anti-lock brakes (ABS), improved engine management and boost control systems enhanced reliability and smoothness as well as minor interior refinements added comfort and ergonomics.
These years helped establish the 944 Turbo as one of the most liveable high-performance cars of its era, loved by both owners and journalists for its predictability, poise, and composure under pressure.
In 1988, Porsche introduced what would become the ultimate evolution of the transaxle platform: the 944 Turbo S. This was not just a special edition—it was a mechanical leap forward. Initially released as a limited-run 1988 model, the Turbo S was differentiated by both performance and packaging.
The key mechanical enhancements included a revised version of the 2.5L turbo engine with a larger K26-8 turbocharger, bigger injectors, and an uprated boost controller. This in turn increased power output to 250 hp and 350 Nm of torque, pushing 0–100 km/h down to 5.7 seconds with a top speed of 260 km/h.
Additionally, the introduction of the Porsche M030 clubsport package comprising of Koni adjustable dampers, thicker anti-roll bars, and reinforced suspension components for sharper handling.
Not stopping there, a larger four-piston Brembo brake system lifted from the 928 S4, offering exceptional stopping power, a strengthened 5-speed unit with a factory limited-slip differential and external oil cooler and finally 16" forged Club Sport alloys in staggered widths—7" front and 9" rear—lightweight and visually distinctive.
With the 944 Turbo S - Peak Porsche Performance had arrived.
For Model Year 1989, Porsche made the Turbo S specification standard across all 944 Turbo models—effectively consolidating the lineup and ensuring that every 944 Turbo sold that year had the full 250 hp, upgraded suspension, and performance enhancements.
These 1989 cars are widely regarded as the pinnacle of 944 development, blending the final refinements of the chassis, powertrain, and interior into one cohesive package.

In 2005, the 944 Turbo went into long term storage and in 2016 was purchased by a long time Porsche collector who recommissioned the car. and in 2019, with the introduction of Porsche’s Classic Partner Program, the 944 Turbo joined with Porsche Centre Melbourne and has been maintained by them since, with the last service taking place in April 2024, just 600kms ago.
As with every collectable example, this 944 Turbo is complete with all of its bookwork, owners manuals, Classic Partner receipting and entry maintained.
An exception example and the best we have ever seen, this 944 Turbo represents one of the finest and most original cars available today.
By the end of 1989, the five year production of the 944 Turbo ended with approximately 25,245 units built globally, of which only a very small percentage were right hand drive and an even smaller number Turbo S specification.
Just 38 Australian-delivered 944 Turbo S specification cars arrived on our shores - and today, examples are so rare and highly sought after today by collectors and Porsche purists, finding one is a holy grail quest.
