When Porsche launched the G-Series 911 in 1974, it was more than just an update — it was a response to growing safety regulations, fuel efficiency demands, and the evolving expectations of the sports car buyer. With impact bumpers mandated by regulations, revised suspension geometry, and increased refinement, the G-Series began to shift the 911 from a raw sports car to a more sophisticated, global performance icon.
By 1978, Porsche was at a crossroads. The expensive and complex 2.7-litre engines of the mid-1970s had suffered from reliability issues. In response, Porsche launched the 911 SC (Super Carrera) – a return to robust engineering with a 3.0-litre flat-six built for longevity and performance.
The 3.0-litre air-cooled flat-six, derived from the 930 Turbo block, delivered 180 hp at launch, later increased to 188 hp and eventually 204 hp by 1981. The bulletproof 5-speed 915 gearbox provided direct engagement and a visceral driving feel. Galvanized body panels (from 1976 onward) greatly improved corrosion resistance, making these among the most durable classic 911s.
The SC was envisioned by many at Porsche to be the final 911 model, with plans to replace it with the front-engined 928. But the SC’s commercial success and the passionate loyalty of Porsche enthusiasts worldwide made that idea short-lived.
We are please to offer this Australian delivered 911 SC in Guards Red over Black Partial Leather Interior.
Sold and delivered by Hamiltons of South Yarra to Dr. P Ross of Hawthorn Victoria, this example has been preserved with integrity and the unmistakable soul of Stuttgart’s golden era.
These Australian-delivered models were built to local specifications, often with unique features such as factory air conditioning and specific compliance for our road conditions, enhancing both its collectability and usability.
Presented in period-correct specification, this SC (Super Carrera) is not just a driver’s car; it is a pivotal chapter in the evolution of the air-cooled 911 dynasty.
Finished in its original factory colour scheme, with matching-numbers engine and gearbox, this car captures the essence of what made the 911 an icon: linear power delivery, timeless design, and mechanical purity wrapped in a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive package.
Benefitting from an exterior refresh including paint and wheel refurbishment over the past decade, the exterior presents in wonderful condition with the later addition of a period "Porsche" side decal.
The Interior, with its classic 911 layout switchgear and instruments remain untouched and original, save for a modern but aesthetically pleasing Continental radio with integrated Bluetooth – not out of place today.
With a logged service history found detailed in its original owners manuals, it features all its period correct bookwork and three keys incl valet and representative of a thoroughly classic 911 to be enjoyed for many years to come.
The midpoint of 911 SC production, often considered the sweet spot for reliability and drivability. Today, the Super Carrera is increasingly sought after for its balance — classic enough to feel vintage, but modern enough to be driven with confidence.
With rising interest in investment-grade classics, the 911 SC has emerged from the shadow of its successor to stand as a true icon. It is the bridge between old-world Porsche engineering and the modern grand touring era. Australian-delivered examples with solid provenance are particularly rare and offer a unique value proposition in the classic 911 market.
Whether you’re a collector looking for a significant piece of Porsche history or a purist in search of the ideal analogue driving experience, this 1979 911 SC is more than a classic — it’s a cornerstone.
